Jokes

A man enters a library and walks up to the librarian at the desk and says loudly, "I'd like a cheeseburger with fries, hold the ketchup!" The librarian replies in whispered tones, "But sir, this is a library!"
Coming to his senses, the man replies in a whispered tone, "Can I please have a cheeseburger with fries, hold the ketchup."

What has a spine but no bones?
A book.

TEACHER: Where is South America?
PUPIL: I don't know.
TEACHER: Where is Greenland?
PUPIL: I don't know.
TEACHER: Where is Bulgaria?
PUPIL: I don't know.
TEACHER: Look them up in your textbook.
PUPIL: I don't know where that is, either.

Did you know? ...

In 2007 the Iowa State Fair had a special sculpture to honour Harry Potter’s final book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it was of Harry Potter and his owl Hedwig and his school trunk, however it was made entirely out of butter!

David Pilkey writer of the Captain Underpants series got the idea for the story when he was at school. “I got the idea when I was a second grader at St. John's Lutheran School in Elyria, Ohio. My teacher used the word "underpants" in class one day and everyone started laughing. She got mad and told us that underwear was not funny. We all laughed harder.”

Get ready for the Philip Pullman Northern Lights movie, named Golden Compass, it is coming out on the 27 December 2007!

If you like Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, why not read the original pirate Captain Long John Silver in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

Notes for Parents

Ways to get your child to read:

  • Find something that really interests your child. Even though the classic books are wonderful, when first encouraging a child to read they can be overwhelming. If your child loves science and space, they might enjoy science-fiction.
  • Start them out with some short stories, it gives your child a sense of accomplishment and seems less overwhelming.
  • Maybe your child isn’t a fan of fiction, encourage it by giving them some non-fiction books.
  • Give your child a variety of books to choose from.
  •  Talk to your bookshop staff, Library staff and teachers, they might be able to help.
  • The best way to encourage your child to read is to read with them! Spend either time after school or just before bed and read to them, read with them or listen to them read.

Rupert Recommends

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Action Adventure

The story is the fictional memoirs of young Jim Hawkins as he is pulled into the world of Pirates and mutineers. This is a book I even remember reading as a child! Now that’s old! Through a series of events innkeeper’s son Jim finds himself on an Island in search of Treasure.

The only problem is so is everyone else, from the charismatic cook Long John Silver with a link to the gold or the half-insane marooned pirate Ben Gunn, Jim must choose his loyalties wisely. The question is who can Jim Hawkins trust?

Margaret Mahy

A popular New Zealand author who has written nearly 50 books, which have been translated into over 10 languages, including German, French, Danish, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Icelandic.

If you like Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights or Zizou Corder’s Lion Boy, you’ll love Margaret Mahy’s interesting characters and Supernatural themes. You may recognise one of her books Maddigan’s Fantasia, which was made into the TV series Maddigan’s Quest. My favourite Mahy book is The Haunting; I find it gives helpful hints for a ghost! However you may enjoy the mystery.

Goosebumps by R.L Stine

Being a ghost, I do enjoy the odd horror and nothing frightens me more than R.L Stine’s Goosebumps series. The books usually contain every ghoul and ghost imaginable; my favourites are How I got my shrunken head and Revenge of the Land Gnomes. I would die of terror (if I wasn’t already dead!)
